The Shop

At Dattatraya Square

Heritage Craft Center is a metalcraft shop at Dattatraya Square in Bhaktapur. It has been open for more than 20 years. Alongside Kathmandu and Patan, Bhaktapur is one of the three old cities of the Kathmandu Valley, and it is known for its metalwork, pottery, and woodcarving.

The collection is curated. Singing bowls, statues, wind bells, oil lamps, ritual objects, and decorative pieces are chosen one at a time for their material, finish, and detail.

Traditional Methods

How These Pieces Are
Traditionally Made

Many pieces in the collection are made with methods that metalworkers in the Kathmandu Valley have used for generations.

Lost-wax casting
A wax model is coated in clay, the wax is melted out, and molten metal is poured into the mould. Used for statues and bells.
Hand-hammering
A heated metal disc is hammered into shape, a little at a time. Used for singing bowls.
Repoussé and engraving
Sheet metal is hammered from the back to raise a design, then finished from the front with chisels.

Not every piece is made the same way. If you want to know how a particular piece was made, ask us.
